Picnic for the Arts

2015 Picnic for the Arts Countdown
It’s just 7 weeks away...
June 12th, from 5:00 – 8:00 pm is Huron’s annual Picnic for the Arts. This year-end celebration is also the school’s largest fundraiser, supporting the excellent artists who perform for our children (K-6) each and every year. Monies raised also make possible hands-on student art projects and instruction. Perennial favourites at the Picnic include a fabulous silent auction, delectable food, fun family games and art activities, a huge book sale, and a homegrown talent show.
You can help in three ways!

Music Monday; Huron Water Bottle; Ward 10 Space Forum; 53 Division Open House; Children’s Mental Health Week

MAY the FOURTH be WITH YOU!!

Music Monday is coming. This annual celebration of music education in schools will take place this year on Monday May 4th. Celebrations all across Canada will be taking place, joining in song as we sing the new anthem ‘We Are One’, written by Connor Ross, a Performing Arts High School student in Bolton. The Huron celebration will take place in the big field, weather permitting, at 1:00pm (in the gym in the event of rain–or snow!!!) The lyrics and music are posted on the Music Room wiki at http://huronmusic.wikispaces.com/Music+Monday

You can also get more information about Music Monday at: www.musicmonday.ca

Please note the time change! Huron’s Music Monday celebration will take place at 1:00pm in the big field rather than at 11:10 in the morning. A significant number of band members are away on a class field trip in the morning, so this will allow them to be back in time to take part in the festivities. The celebrations will take place in the gym in the event of inclement weather.

THE HURON WATER BOTTLE

We would like to introduce to you the new HURON WATER BOTTLE!! All students brought home a hard copy of the flier (copy attached to this email) with all the information you need for ordering.  They can be ordered at any time now and will also be available for sale at the Picnic For The Arts coming up on June 12th, 2015. The water bottles are $15.00 each – payment can be cash or cheque made payable to “Huron Street Public School Council”. Thank you so much for supporting our new fundraising idea!

WARD 10 SPACE FORUM

Huron is still looking for a second person to attend the upcoming “Space Forum” for all Ward 10 schools. Please see the message below and the attached flier for more information.  There is one member of our School Council who is interested in attending and we are looking for a second person.

If you would like to attend please call the school at 416-393-1570 and let us know.

(Remember – do not reply to this email.  Your response will not be received.)

Dear Huron parent(s)/caregivers:
There are many questions about the future of the schools in our Ward.

The TDSB Ward 10 Space Committee, has worked with me to organize theSpace Forum, for Thursday April 30th, from 6:00PM to 9:00PM at Ryerson School, 96 Denison.

Child care is provided. Refreshments are served. Translation will be available on request.

The Manager of Planning for the TDSB, Andrew Gowdy, will be presenting and walking us through questions about school use.

We are requesting that each School Council confirm two representatives to attend the Forum to understand how use and utilization of schools is determined, and the different processes that the TDSB and the Ministry of Education use to review these spaces (eg. PART, ARC etc.) — and the implications for schools in our Ward. It is also a great opportunity to meet members from neighbouring School Councils.

Of course, the Space Forum is open to all who are interested. Please share!
Below is the flyer, which can also be downloaded here. And here is the Facebook invitation to join.

As always, feel free to be in touch with any questions.

With gratitude,

Ausma Malik
Trustee, TDSB Ward 10, Trinity-Spadina

EARTH DAY
Earth Day 2015 is coming up on Wednesday April 22nd, 2015. Environmental education is an important part of the on-going education here at Huron and we’d like to thank everyone for their commitment. Special thanks to the Eco-Club; students, parents and staff, who volunteer their time to plan and organize all our “Environmental Awareness” activities throughout the school year. Your leadership is amazing – and so very important!!

LOST AND FOUND
Our Lost and Found is starting to fill up again – please everyone remember to check Lost and Found regularly and claim any belongings. Students are reminded regularly to bring lost and found items from their classrooms and hallways to the Lost and Found structure, so even if you can’t find something on one day please continue to check. Sometimes it takes a little while but most things do, eventually, end up in Lost and Found. Please note – food containers are thrown out regularly!! It doesn’t take long for the food in them to become disgusting, which is then smelly and attracts things we don’t want. For that reason, all food containers that end up in Lost and Found are thrown out regularly – so please check Lost and Found if your child left their lunchbag at school.

SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETING
Our next School Council meeting is planned for this Tuesday April 21st, 2015, at 6:00pm. All parents/caregivers are welcome to attend.

Tafelmusik; 20 Min Makeover; Lice Check; Mental Health Week

TAFELMUSIK FIELD TRIP
On Monday April 13, all pupils from grades 2 to 6 will be attending Tafelmusik’s presentation of The Quest for Arundo Donax at Trinity-St. Paul Center, just west of the Metro grocery store (427 Bloor Street West). We will have an early lunch and leave the school at about 12:05pm to get there in time to be seated for the 12:45pm concert start time. It’s free! Permission forms went home two weeks ago – and thank you very much to all parents/caregivers who have volunteered to come with us.

20 MINUTE MAKE-OVER
On Friday, April 17th, students from across the TDSB are encouraged to help rejuvenate Toronto’s green spaces by picking up litter in their school yard or neighbourhood parks. Huron students will be doing their part this Friday afternoon and all parents/caregivers are welcome to join us. The school will be providing all students will one vinyl glove that they can wear – however if your child has their own pair of gardening gloves (or any other alternative) that they could use instead please consider sending them to school on Friday and help us reduce the number of disposable gloves we will be using.
Please speak to your child’s teacher for specific information about when and where they will be cleaning.

LICE CHECK THIS WEEK
Our team of trained, parent volunteers has very generously volunteered to come in and help us do another school wide check of all students for pediculosis (lice). They are going to be doing the check sometime this week, likely on either Monday and/or Tuesday, April 13th and/or 14th, 2015. As you know, this is an excellent preventative measure and one that really helps a school community monitor, and limit as much as possible, this very common school occurrence. If you do not want your child to participate please send an email to: huronstreetpsjr@tdsb.on.ca or call the school at 416-393-1570.

CHILDREN’S MENTAL HEALTH WEEK
Each year, Ontarians mark the first full week of May as Children’s Mental Health Week. The week is about increasing awareness of the signs of child and youth mental health needs, decreasing stigma and understanding that help is available. This year, the TDSB has planned a Parent Symposium for Saturday May 9th; “Taking Action Together”. Please find attached a flier with more information about this Parent Symposium. A copy of this flier is also posted on the bulletin board across the hall from the Main Office.

Passover and Easter; Day of Pink; Tafelmusik; Mental Health Week

HAPPY PASSOVER and HAPPY EASTER
A reminder this weekend is a long weekend – there is NO SCHOOL on Friday April 3rd or Monday April 6th. We will see everyone again on Tuesday April 7th.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PINK
Day of Pink is the International Day against Bullying, Discrimination, Homophobia and Transphobia in schools and communities. We invite everyone to celebrate diversity by wearing something PINK on Wednesday April 8th, 2015. (And Grade 5 and 6 students who will be at the Island/Natural Science School, don’t forget to take something pink to wear today!)

The International Day of Pink is a day of action, born when a youth in a high school in Cambridge, Nova Scotia was bullied because he wore a pink shirt to school. His fellow students decided to stand up to bullying; and hundreds of students came to school wearing pink to show support for diversity and stopping discrimination, gender-based bullying, homophobia and transphobia. Huron Public School and the TDSB encourages staff and students to wear pink in support of diversity.

The International Day of Pink is more than just a symbol of a shared belief in celebrating diversity – it’s also a commitment to being open minded, to being understanding of differences and to learning to respect each other. For more information about the International Day of Pink check out: www.dayofpink.org

In addition to everyone wearing something pink on Wednesday April 8th we will also be selling milk and cookies for $1.00 each. All proceeds raised will be donated to “Jer’s Vision”, which is now known as the Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity. For more information about “Jer’s Vision” please check out: www.ccgsd-ccdgs.org
