STUDENT LEAD FUNDRAISER

Periodically throughout the school year, some of our Grade 5 and 6 students take it upon themselves to organize a fundraiser for a charity which they select.  The students work with a staff advisor on their project but the projects are entirely student-led; the idea, the organization and the execution.

Part of the responsibility that the students have when planning their fundraiser is to write an email to our parent/caregiver community which will be included in an email blast.  Please find below information about one such fundraiser that will be happening in December.  Your participation in the fundraiser is completely voluntary.

Dear parents/guardians,

One of our grade six students is having a fundraiser for Operation Smile. It’s an organization with volunteers that give 100 out of 1000 children free surgeries for their cleft lips and pallets. It’s a condition that children are born with and a lot of kids get bullied and teased because of that and the children that can’t get the free surgeries have to wait for years. So Razan, a grade six student in Huron, is having a fundraiser for that. The money that she raises will go to the organization so rather than 100 out of 1000 maybe 600 out of 1000 children can get the free surgery. One surgery costs about 240 dollars, so Razan is hoping for at least 30 people to get the free surgery; remember every cent counts. Razan is selling slime (please note that the slime may contain borax). The sale is going to be happening on Monday and Wednesday for the first three weeks of December. If you would like to donate separately just google up www.operationsmile.ca

For the slime that I am selling at the school the prices are:
- the big slime with glitter $5.50
- the big slime with nothing in it $5.00
- the big slime with foam beads $6.00
- the big slime with everything $6.50
- the small slime with nothing $2.00
- the small slime with glitter $2.50
- the small slime with foam beads $3.00
- the small slime with everything $3.50

Thanks for your support of my fundraiser.

LOOKING FOR DONATIONS TO OUR INDOOR LUNCH PROGRAM

We are looking for any gently used games, puzzles, activities etc. that could be used during our indoor lunches.  If you should have anything like this at home that isn’t being used any longer the school would welcome any donations.  Thankfully we don’t usually have too many days when the students need to stay indoors, but having a nice variety of activities for when they do is very helpful.

Additionally, if you have any DVDs that are suitable for children we would also appreciate any DVD donations.  The students are usually split into two groups (by grade) during indoor lunches, with Grades 1, 2 and 3 being one group and Grades 4, 5 and 6 being a second group.  Any DVDs that might appeal to either age group would be useful to us.

Huron Happenings – Nov. 12, 2018

PHOTO RETAKES

A reminder that photo retakes are happening on Tuesday November 13th, 2018 after lunch.  The photography company will be here and ready to start at 12:45pm.

Any student who was absent, or wasn’t yet attending Huron, on our original photo day (Oct. 16th) will automatically have their photos taken on Nov. 13th.  If you want retakes for photos that were taken on Oct. 16 the company has asked that you please return the proof sheet that you received and those photos can also be retaken.  It doesn’t take the company long to do retakes – usually less than an hour – so it’s important that all students having photos taken on Tuesday be at school at 12:45pm.

STUDENT DATA VERIFICATION FORMS

A few weeks ago you received an envelope with your child’s personal information according to what we have on our data base here at school.  Please remember to update any changes such as; address, phone numbers, emails etc. and return the form to school as soon as possible.  If there are no changes, you do not have to return the form.  It is very important that we have accurate contact information for our students so please make sure you notify the Office if anything should change throughout the school year!

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS
Chess Club at Huron Public School !

Chess Institute of Canada (CIC) is bringing its popular and rewarding  school chess club back to Huron this Winter !
All levels of chess players are welcome. Beginners will be gifted with the universal language of chess knowledge, while advanced players will be challenged and raised to new levels. While learning or expanding their chess knowledge, students also gain important values and life skills such as:

  • goal setting
  • creative analysis
  • resilience
  • respect for others
  • responsibility for decisions

These skills are gained through our approach to chess as a mental martial art, where choosing a move means:

  • taking wise, calculated risks
  • dealing with unexpected and disappointing outcomes
  • reflecting critically on changing situations
  • looking deeper to find more viable options than may at first appear
  • valuing diverse abilities and skill sets
  • realizing there are choices in every situation

As this strong, respectful and resilient mindset is nourished, players will have a lot of fun with our experienced and engaging instructors, who will appeal to and elevate their natural abilities. Chess is an amazing activity for children of all ages, where focus and skills are gained with surprising speed.
Program details:

  • Chess Club will be held on Tuesdays after school
  • starting on December 4th, 2018 for 12 weeks until March 5th, 2019
  • and is open to students in Grades SK to 6
  • The cost of the program is $156 and funding assistance is available

To register, please visit https://chessinstitute.ca/register and click on the “Chess Clubs” option. After selecting your city and school board, type in the first word of your school’s name and the chess club will come up.

Please feel free to reach out to CIC Operations Manager Marcus Wilker (marcus@chessinstitute.ca)  if you have any questions and he will be happy to help you.

Huron Happening – Nov. 5, 2018

REMEMBRANCE DAY CEREMONY

Our school ceremony to mark Remembrance Day will be help on Friday November 9th, 2018 beginning at approximately 10:45am. Any parents/caregivers are welcome to attend along with all our students and staff.

Again this year, a member of our broader Huron Community has arranged for a special donation of poppy stickers from The Royal Canadian Legion – one for each student to wear during the ceremony. We also have a donation box on the counter in the Main Office for anyone who would like to make a donation and don a poppy over the next few days.

At this time we always encourage our Huron families to make a donation to The Royal Canadian Legion and their Poppy Campaign. All the money donated here at the school will be picked up by a RCL branch member and go directly to support veterans and their families. If you would consider sending a loonie or toonie with your child this week, classroom teachers will be collecting all donations.

Thanks to everyone for your support – and we hope to see many of you at our ceremony on Friday.

Huron Happenings – Oct. 22, 2018

PIZZA LUNCH

Our first Pizza Lunch is happening on Wednesday, October 24th, 2018 and thank you to all the parents/caregivers who are involved in planning our pizza lunches!

The pizza has already been ordered for Wednesday and unfortunately last minute orders cannot be accepted. If there are any, extra slices will be available for sale for $3.00 each. If pizza wasn’t ordered in advance please do remember to send a lunch on Wednesday as extra slices are not always available.

FALL WALK TO SCHOOL DAY

Come celebrate our Fall Walk to School day on Wednesday, October 24th. Students and families are encouraged to walk to school (even if only a part of the way) to promote daily physical activity, a healthier environment, safer streets, making friends and…having fun! We will have greeters cheer you on at the front of our school.

Even more wonderful, we are combining our Walk to School day with Take Me Outside Day – so students will be walking to school and learning outside for part of the day. Make sure students are dressed appropriately for the weather on Oct. 24th as all classes will be going outside for a learning opportunity today.

We thank our Eco leaders in grades 4-6 who have been promoting both of these activities, and look forward to being outside together.

HURON EARTH HOUR

Our Huron Earth Hour for October is going to be held on Friday October 26th from 2:20-3:20pm. As part of our commitment to being a Platinum Level Eco-School, this is an opportunity for our school community, every month, to focus on ways we can reduce our energy consumption. Throughout the school we turn off as many lights as we can and power down/turn off as many electronics as possible. Classrooms use this time for discussions and planning. We would encourage Huron families to think about engaging in similar activities at home as well.

ORDERING PHOTOS

Your child may have received it yesterday, if not they will on Monday – and every student will be bringing home the information about how you can order school photographs for this year. All students who were present on Oct. 16th will have a proof-sheet to bring home. All ordering is done online, directly through “Brightpics” (the company that takes the photographs). Please note that the deadline for ordering is Monday October 29th, 2018.

For students who were absent on Oct. 16th, or if there is a flaw in the original photos, our re-take day for photos is Tues. Nov. 13th in the afternoon.

BOOK FAIR

Our book fair is coming in November (a new time for us) from November 13th-16th, 2018. Please see the attached flyer. Bookfair – Huron (Fall 2018).pdf
Our Book Fair is run by Ella Minnow Bookstore and a portion of all sales helps support buying books for our Huron Library.

If you are able to help out at the Book Fair after school on Thursday, Thursday evening or Friday morning, please email me. I am also looking for setting up and taking down help on Tuesday morning and Friday afternoon.

Huron Happenings – Oct. 15, 2018

WASTE REDUCTION WEEK

Our first waste free lunch week of this year (our third overall) begins tomorrow, on Monday October 15th! We are encouraging students to bring ‘no garbage’ lunches that week – through bringing reusable containers, water bottles, whole fruits and other waste-free snack and lunch ideas. This initiative will be shared by our Eco student leaders in classroom presentations and on the morning announcements. We hope to catch many students being waste-free or as waste-reduced as possible. During our spot-checks, students have the chance to earn a stamp on their hand and have their picture taken (with their lunch or snack) on our wall of fame.

This project is part of Canada’s waste reduction week (https://wrwcanada.com/en). Huron’s school-wide focus last spring was on reducing single use plastic. We will continue our learning about plastic waste (like plastic water bottles or bags), its environmental impact and ways to reduce the amount of plastic we use. Last year, students in many classes made a personal plastic pledge for what action they could take to reduce plastic waste.

We are hoping you can join us in these activities by learning more about ways to reduce garbage in snack and lunch packaging or other eco-actions with your family. Waste Free Lunch.pdf

PARKING and DROPPING STUDENTS OFF IN THE MORNING

As we all know, our parking lot is very small and often does not have enough space for staff and visitors to the school. We are asking for parent/caregiver support in NOT using the parking lot as a drop-off/pick-up spot for your vehicles. On several occasions recently staff have had to wait, drive around the block and in some cases pay for parking for the day, only to come back to the lot and find spaces that were only temporarily occupied while someone was being dropped off. Please leave our limited parking spaces open and available for staff.

For everyone to think about – rather than just increase the congestion of vehicles on the street (which we also recognize as being problematic) perhaps as a community, especially being a Platinum Level Eco-School, we could think about solutions such as dropping off a couple of blocks away and allowing for a little walk to school, or is it really necessary to drive in the first place? Alternative methods of coming to school are something we can all think about as we try and reduce our carbon footprint.

CENTRAL TECHNICAL SCHOOL – COMMUNITY SWIM

The pool is divided in three so that it can accommodate families with small children, anyone who can swim in deep water,(or would like to use the diving board), as well as lane swim. TIPS and WORKSHOPS BY TORONTO PUBLIC HEALTH

Make sure your child’s vaccinations are up-to-date: By law, under the Immunization of School Pupils Act (ISPA), students in Ontario are required to have up-to-date vaccinations or a valid exemption to attend school. See your doctor if your child needs any vaccines, and report your child’s vaccination record online to Toronto Public Health at toronto.ca/studentvaccines.
Take your child to see an optometrist: Research shows that 80 percent of what children know is learned through their eyes. OHIP covers an annual eye exam for children age 19 and under, and children in junior kindergarten are eligible for a free pair of glasses if needed through the Eye See Eye Learn program. Make an appointment with an optometrist.
Assess if your child needs help with their speech and language development: Learn more about the speech and development milestones your child should reach before they enter kindergarten and access resources that are available if you have concerns.

A FREE 2 hour family workshop is being hosted at the Palmerston Library (Bathurst & Bloor area). on Saturday, October 13th @2:00pm. The invitation is for parents with children 10 – 14.years to attend together and engage in fun, interactive activities on the subject of being home alone safely. See the attached poster. SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETING

Our first School Council Meeting of the 2018/2019 school year will be happening on Tuesday October 2nd, 2018 at 6:00pm, in the school Library. All parents/caregivers are welcome to attend the meeting and be a part of the discussions. If you are new to Huron, or have never been to a School Council meeting before a special encouragement to join us at this meeting and see what’s it all about. TERRY FOX

Our school is proud to be participating in the Terry Fox School Run, during the afternoon on Friday September 28th. Please join our school community and support this worthy cause, click: http://www.terryfox.ca/HuronStreetPSToronto to be taken to our school’s fundraising page. The Terry Fox Foundation has a great reputation with 82 cents of every dollar going directly to cancer research. Since Huron Street School started our association with the Terry Fox Walk we have raised over $98,000.00 towards cancer research. We had a kick-off assembly with a speaker from the Terry Fox Foundation two weeks ago, and daily announcements about Terry Fox and his run across Canada for cancer research are helping to build excitement. All students received a hard copy with information about the walk and how to donate, and extra copies are available in the Main Office if needed. Please plan to join us for our walk on September 28th – we’ll be leaving from the school at approx. 1:00pm and returning by dismissal time. Remember we walk rain or shine so everyone needs to dress appropriately for the weather! We’re looking forward to seeing this year’s fundraising total.
Thank you for joining us in the fight against cancer.

ENTRY INTO THE SCHOOL IN THE MORNINGS

A reminder to everyone that unless students need to come into the office in the morning, all students and their families should walk around directly to the schoolyard and be prepared to line up with their classes when the bell rings. Students and their families should not be coming into the school unless there is a specific reason to do so. Families please be conscious of the fact that the office is a very busy place in the mornings and it’s not always possible for us to answer the buzzer immediately when it rings. Please support Ms. Vallely with this and let’s try and reduce the number of people coming into the building unnecessarily. Of course no changes for families coming to Superfriends in the morning. Thank you everyone for your support with this.
