Report on Jump Rope for Heart Event at Huron

This message is from Mr. D’Onofrio….
Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s):

On Friday, May 18th from 1-2 p.m. the North Field at Huron was transformed into a Jump Rope for Heart event for all students in grades 1-6. It was very impressive to see approximately 300 students skipping under sunny skies to raise awareness for a great and worthy cause.

The final tally is in and Huron raised an impressive \$4, 173.78.

As part of the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Jump Rope for Heart program, schools often receive a credit of 10% of total monies raised from their individual event. This credit goes directly to the athletics program at each school. In our case, we would be eligible for a credit of just north of $400. However, our school’s athletics program is presently well-stocked and this is indeed a testament to the generosity of school council.

Therefore, on behalf of all staff, students, and parents at Huron St PS I have re-gifted our school’s credit to the Heart and Stroke Foundation for further research and development.

Please join me in celebrating the proud and continuing tradition of fundraising and giving that makes Huron St PS such an amazing and wonderful school environment.

Sincerely,

Mr. D’Onofrio

Second City performed “Stop Punching Judy” at Huron.

Hello Huron, on Thursday May 31,The Second City performed “Stop Punching Judy” for our Grade1-6 students.  Stop Punching Judy is an anti-bullying, interactive puppet presentation. The program emphasises personal safety for witnesses and empathy towards the bullied and the bullies alike.  There show sent a powerful message regarding the power of the bystander and the importance of telling someone you can trust if you are being bullied.  Our students really enjoyed the interactive show and the feedback afterwards was very positive. For more information on the show go to http://www.secondcity.com/page/education-toronto/#featured

Heart and Stroke Jump Rope for Heart Program (May 18)

Hello Huron, this message is from Mr. D’Onofrio our PHE Teacher

Parents/Guardians:

It has been five years since Huron last participated in the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Jump Rope for Heart Program. I am pleased to announce that we will once again be participating in this worthwhile program this spring.

On Friday, May 18th from 1-2 p.m. in the big field, all Huron students in Grades 1-6 will be skipping outside to not only raise funds, but also awareness for this great cause. Students will be receiving their very own skipping rope (theirs to keep!) and they will be skipping with their classes, friends, and with the help of our Grade 6 students who will be leading different skipping events at many locations in the North field.

It will truly be a great way to build school spirit, raise awareness, and keep fit!

Please be on the lookout for pledge forms which will be sent home with students late next week. All pledge forms are to be returned to your child’s homeroom teacher by Friday, May 25th at the latest.

Attached is a copy of the Heart and Stroke Jump Rope for Heart parent letter should you be interested in learning more about this important issue.

The website can also be found at the below address:

As always, thank you for your continued support of our athletics program at Huron.

Sincerely,

David D’Onofrio

Day of Pink: Thursday April 11

On April 11th Huron will be celebrating Day of Pink to support and celebrate diversity. We want to get as many Huron students and staff to wear pink on this day to stand up against all forms of bullying.
What is the Day of Pink?

April 11th marks the International Day of Pink. It is a day where communities across the country, and across the world, can unite in celebrating diversity and raising awareness to stop homophobic & all forms of bullying.

The International Day of Pink was started in Nova Scotia when 2 straight high school students saw a gay student wearing a pink shirt being bullied. The 2 students intervened, but wanted to do more to prevent homophobic & transphobic bullying. They decided to purchase pink shirts, and a few days later got everyone at school to arrive wearing pink, standing in solidarity. The result was that an entire school stopped homophobic & transphobic bullying.

The message was clear: anyone can bully, anyone can be victimized by bullying, but together we can stop it.

Each year on the second Wednesday of April, millions of people wear pink to remember that positive actions make a difference. And that the change starts with each one of us.
Why should you participate?

Have you ever seen a friend hurt because of discrimination? Have you been hurt yourself? Discrimination comes in many forms including racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, agism and anti-semitism just to name a few. These social diseases create barriers, bullying, harassment, hate and violence. No one should have to experience the negativity created by discrimination. DayofPink is more than just a symbol of a shared belief in celebrating diversity – it’s also a commitment to being open minded, accepting differences and learning to respect each other.

At Huron, we will be selling juice and cookies for a toonie to support Jer’s Vision an agency that works to eliminate bullying, homophobia, transphobia, and other forms of discrimination in schools and youth communities. For more information go to www.dayofpink.org or www.jersvision.org.
