Huron Happenings – Sept. 18, 2017

INFORMATION PACKAGE – PLEASE RETURN

During the first week of school, ALL STUDENTS (Kindergarten to Grade 6) received a VERY IMPORTANT package of papers. The forms look a little different this year (the TDSB has strealined them) but this is the package that needs to be returned to the school. Don’t even take the staple out – every page in it needs to be returned. If you haven’t yet, please read the information carefully, sign where indicated, and return the entire package to your child’s teacher. If you did not receive this package of information please see your child’s teacher or the Main Office.

BBQ and MEET THE TEACHER NIGHT

Mark the date – Wednesday September 27th in your calendars and plan to join us at our BBQ and Meet the Teacher Night. With the support of School Council, we’re trying something new this year and we’re going to have a community BBQ (hotdogs and drinks) before we open up the classrooms for our Meet the Teacher Night. So please come and join us from 5:00-6:00pm for a hotdog in the school yard, and then classrooms will be open from 6:00-7:00pm for you to meet your childrens’ teachers. Please see the attached flyer for more information.

HURON WALKS FOR TERRY FOX

Huron’s annual Terry Fox Walk will be held on THURDAY SEPTEMBER 28th and we’ll leave from the school after lunch (at approx. 1:00pm). This is truly a community event and we encourage as many family and friends as possible to join us that afternoon. Dress up if you want, bring a noise maker, and make sure you have good walking shoes and a smile! Students have received an information letter and pledge sheet – extras are available in the office. To date, Huron has raised just over $91,000.00 for cancer research since we started doing our Terry Fox walks in 2005. Please help us continue our excellent tradition of fundraising for this worthwhile cause. In addition to the pledge sheets which students received, on-line fundraising is fast and easy, and information about this is included in the sheets your child received.

ORANGE SHIRT DAY

On Friday September 29th, students and staff across the TDSB will come together and wear Orange Shirts to recognize the harm that the Residential School System did to First Nations, Métis and Inuit children and to recognize that “Every Child Matters.” Orange shirt day is a movement that officially began in 2013 but in reality it began in 1973 when six year old Phyllis Webstad entered the St. Joseph Mission Residential School, outside of Williams Lake, BC. The date, September 30, was chosen because that was the time of the year the trucks and buses would enter the communities to “collect” the children and deliver them to their harsh new reality of cultural assimilation, mental, sexual and physical abuse, shame and deprivation. The impact of residential schools affects every Canadian. (Bob Joseph, Working Effectively with Indigenous Peoples, 2015) Honouring this day shows our commitment to Reconciliation. VOLUNTEER FORMS

Last week all students received a blue “Parent/Caregiver Volunteer Form” – if you didn’t get one please check with your child’s teacher or the Main Office. Please read the information in this form and if you can lend a hand and help out as a volunteer at any time during the school year please let us know on the blue form and return it to the school. We’re not looking for big commitments – whatever you can manage is very much appreciated.
