Huron Happenings – February 27, 2017

AFRICAN HERITAGE MONTH CELEBRATION ASSEMBLY

Parents/caregivers, if you are available please plan to join us for our African Heritage Month Celebration Assembly on Monday February 27th beginning at approximately 10:40am (after morning recess). Several classes and student groups are looking forward to performing! We’d also like to take this opportunity to say a special “thank you” to Ms. Conliffe for her leadership with this special event.

PIZZA LUNCH

Wednesday March 1st is our next Pizza Lunch – as always a huge “thank you” to all the parent/caregiver volunteers who help make our pizza lunches happen. A reminder that the pizza for next Wednesday has already been ordered. Any extra slices will be sold on Wednesday for $2.00 each, but always best to make sure students have sufficient lunch just in case we don’t have enough extra slices.

HURON’S ANNUAL DANCE-A-THON

Mark your calendars – Huron’s Annual Dance-A-Thon fundraiser is going to be held on Thursday March 9th, 2017. All classes, Kindergarten to Grade 6, will be participating and parents/caregivers are welcome to come and boogie with your son/daughter. Dust off your dancing shoes and plan to join us if you are able. More information will be coming shortly – and in advance we’d like to thank everyone for their very generous donations to this fundraiser.

LOST AND FOUND

Again there is quite an extraordinary collection of “stuff” in our Lost and Found and it’s really important that all families are checking Lost and Found regularly and taking home items that belong to you. All items in Lost and Found will be donated to charity during our March Break holiday which is in two weeks (March 13 – 17 inclusive).

Sight and Sound Clinic at Huron

Again this year we are pleased to let you know that a Sight and Sound Clinic (Vision and Hearing screening) is planning to be held here at the school.  Please see the attached fliers and below for more information.

During this upcoming week all students will be given a hard copy of the registration form to take home, and extra copies will be available at the school office.  The deadline to return the form, if you would like your child to participate, is Friday March 10th, 2017.  After March Break we will let you know if we have sufficient numbers for the clinic to run at Huron.

The Toronto Foundation for Student Success (TFSS), a registered charitable foundation of TDSB, is offering a vision and hearing screening at Huron Street Jr. P.S.. The vision screening includes tests for visual acuity, colour blindness, depth perception and strabismus (eye turning in/out). The vision and hearing screenings are conducted by trained International Medical Graduates (IMG) and certified Communicative Disorder Assistants. A nominal fee is charged to cover the services administrative costs.

If a problem is detected at the screening, a note will be sent home to direct you to health care professionals for further evaluation, proper care and follow through.

The vision and hearing screening services are optional. If you are interested in having your child screened, please complete and sign registration form that all students will be bring home during the week and return to school by Friday March 10th, 2017. Please note that for a clinic to run at the school, a minimum of 25 students registered is required. Pending the required number of registered students, our vision and hearing screening is scheduled on Tuesday April 4th, 2017.

For your additional information, for children 19 years and below, OHIP covers the cost of the eye examination by the Optometrist once a year.

FEBRUARY HURON EARTH HOUR

Friday, February 24th, 2017 is when we’re having our monthly Huron Earth Hour – the time each month when our whole school focuses on reducing our energy consumption. At this time, as much as possible, all classrooms turn off their lights and power down, or off, all electronic equipment. We also encourage all families in our Huron community to spend time each month doing the same – and you’d be surprised what great activites you can do that don’t involve energy consumption.

PROLOGUE TO THE PERFORMING ARTS

On Monday, February 13th, Ballet Creole will be coming to perform for our Grade 4, 5 and 6 students. The performance will begin at approximately 1:00pm. Parents/caregivers who are available at this time and would like to join us for this performance are very welcome to attend.

FIRST TERM REPORT CARDS

All students in Grades 1-6 will be bringing home their first Report Card for this school year on Tuesday, February 14th, 2017. This Report Card reflects all the work that your child has done so far this school year, from September to the end of January.

Students in Junior Kindergarten will be receiving a Junior Kindergarten Summary Report, also on Tuesday, February 14th, 2017.

At this time of year students in Senior Kindergarten are not receiving a written report however your child’s teachers may be contacting you to arrange for an interview to discuss the progress your child is making.

Over the next couple of weeks, teachers will also be conducting Parent/Caregiver/Teacher interviews. Teachers may be contacting you to arrange for an interview and as always, if parents/caregivers would like to meet with your child’s teacher please don’t hesitate to contact the teacher and arrange for a time.

OVERDUE LIBRARY BOOKS

In order to try and reduce the number of lost Library books from our school Library, we like to take this opportunity, mid-way through the school year, to let families know if there are, at this point in time, Library books that are overdue to be returned. As you can imagine, the replacement costs for lost Library books can really add up, so the school very much appreciates the extra time you give to looking for overdue Library books and if possible, supporting us towards the cost of replacing the book if it is indeed lost. If your child has any overdue Library books you will be receiving a notification during this upcoming week and once again, we appreciate your support in trying to find as many of these books as possible.

P.A. DAY and HOLIDAY

A reminder to everyone that Friday February 17th, 2017 is a PA Day, and Monday February 20th, 2017 is a holiday, so there will be NO SCHOOL for students on either of these days. We hope that everyone has a wonderful FAMILY DAY holiday together.

Helping the Homeless

A Huron student, supported by his grandmother, is spearheading an initiative to help Toronto’s homeless, and they would like to ask our broader Huron community to contribute if you’d like.

They are collecting new, or gently used, gloves/mittens, hats and scarves and they are personally going to be taking them to those in need in our local community.

A box will be put in the front foyer of the school and if anyone has any of these items which they would like to donate please feel free to bring them in. You can be guaranteed that your donation will go directly to someone in need.

In advance – thank you to everyone for your support.

Kindergarten Registration – Feb. 15th, 2017

Please tell your friends and neighbours – Huron will be holding our Kindergarten Registration Day on Wednesday, February 15th, 2017. Please see the attached flier for more information.

Children born in 2013 are eligible to begin Junior Kindergarten in September 2017, and now is when they can start registering.

Children born in 2012 who are not yet attending school may also register for Senior Kindergarten.

If your child is already attending Junior Kindergarten you don’t need to do anything!

Please help us spread the word about our Kindergarten Registration Day to our local community. Feel free to print the attached flier and put it up in places where it might be seen by local families new to Huron, and please think about your neighbours and families that live nearby. If they have children born in 2013 encourage them to come on February 15th, 2017.

OPTIONAL ATTENDANCE

It is important to note that at this time we will only be registering students who live within the boundary area for Huron. This includes siblings of current students. No registrations for students living outside of the boundary area will occur on Feb. 15th.

All families who wish to apply for Optional Attendance for Kindergarten at Huron (JK and SK), including siblings of current students, MUST complete an Optional Attendance Form. The deadline for Optional Attendance Forms is Friday February 17th, 2017. Optional Attendance forms can be found on the TDSB web, or you can get a hard copy from the school office.

Please note that the Optional Attendance Form requires the signature from the principal of what would be your child’s home school, and then needs to be returned to Huron by the deadline.

If anyone has any questions please don’t hesitate to contact the school (416-393-1570).

Thanks for helping us spread the word.

Huron Happening – February 6, 2017

TERRY FOX DONATION

We would like to thank our entire Huron Community for their wonderful efforts to support the Terry Fox Foundation and Cancer Research, and we are pleased to let you know that this year Huron has donated $4,175.00. On-line donations continued to be placed long after our Terry Fox Walk last fall – so thanks again for all donations made both at the time of our Terry Fox Walk and during the following weeks. It is all very much appreciated.
