Report on Jump Rope for Heart Event at Huron

This message is from Mr. D’Onofrio….
Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s):

On Friday, May 18th from 1-2 p.m. the North Field at Huron was transformed into a Jump Rope for Heart event for all students in grades 1-6. It was very impressive to see approximately 300 students skipping under sunny skies to raise awareness for a great and worthy cause.

The final tally is in and Huron raised an impressive \$4, 173.78.

 As part of the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Jump Rope for Heart program, schools often receive a credit of 10% of total monies raised from their individual event. This credit goes directly to the athletics program at each school. In our case, we would be eligible for a credit of just north of $400. However, our school’s athletics program is presently well-stocked and this is indeed a testament to the generosity of school council.

Therefore, on behalf of all staff, students, and parents at Huron St PS I have re-gifted our school’s credit to the Heart and Stroke Foundation for further research and development.

Please join me in celebrating the proud and continuing tradition of fundraising and giving that makes Huron St PS such an amazing and wonderful school environment.

Sincerely,

Mr. D’Onofrio

Picnic 2012

Picnic 2012 was a huge success! We had wonderful weather and a record number of attendees, tickets sold, food eaten, hands henna’d, faces painted, shoes kicked, and books browsed. Principal Stathopoulos and several teachers graciously allowed themselves to get dunked over and over again. The silent auction was a terrific success, and the talent show – which included two live auctions – was unforgettable!

Thanks to our terrific volunteers and to everyone who came out to participate in the event. Funds raised by the Picnic are allocated by Parent Council toward arts programming in the school and other areas of community need. We have a great community. Congratulations, Huron!

Second City performed “Stop Punching Judy” at Huron.

Hello Huron, on Thursday May 31,The Second City performed “Stop Punching Judy” for our Grade1-6 students.  Stop Punching Judy is an anti-bullying, interactive puppet presentation. The program emphasises personal safety for witnesses and empathy towards the bullied and the bullies alike.  There show sent a powerful message regarding the power of the bystander and the importance of telling someone you can trust if you are being bullied.  Our students really enjoyed the interactive show and the feedback afterwards was very positive. For more information on the show go to http://www.secondcity.com/page/education-toronto/#featured
