Our Kindergarten Concert on Thursday

To all of our Kindergarten families – the following is some information about our KINDERGARTEN CONCERT on Thursday night:

The kindergarten children have been working hard preparing their songs for Thursday’s concert – May 18th, 2017. It starts at 6:00pm, and should conclude at approximately 6:45pm. The performers will be positioned along the long wall underneath the windows of the gym – so audience members will be facing the west wall of the gym. We’ve found that this set-up has created a more intimate space and makes filming your little ones so much easier. Students will be meeting in their classrooms before the concert at 5:45pm (and please, there is no need to come earlier than that) and then their teachers will bring them to the gym to find their seats right in front of the performing area. All students will be in the gym for the entire concert. After the concert, please allow the teachers and students to leave first, and the teachers will take their classes back to their classrooms. You can pick up your children (and their belongings) from their classrooms. This system allows for far less chaos in the gym and allows us to ensure that every child meets up with their adult. Looking forward to seeing you Thursday May 18th, 2017 at 6:00pm!

SILVER BIRCH READING PROGRAM

Did you know that over 65 students participated this year in our Silver Birch reading program (organised by the Ontario Library Association)? And that almost 50 students read enough books (5 out of the 10 Canadian-authored nominated Express, Fiction or Nonfiction books) to participate in our voting day? We are excited to have two Silver Birch reading club celebrations this upcoming week. On Tuesday morning (May 16th), our Silver Birch fiction readers get to meet the author, Ellen Schwartz, of our first place Huron-winning Silver Birch book, Heart of a Champion. She will work with a small group of 23 keen grade 4-6 readers, with a few classroom writers joining in. In this interactive writing workshop, she will show how she plans, researches, writes, rewrites and publishes books, and will get the students writing too. The library will be set up like a writing cafe and we are so thrilled to offer this kind of opportunity for the first time at Huron. To find out more about Ellen, please visit: https://www.ellenschwartz.net/

Then on Wednesday, May 17th, the fun continues as our 26 Silver Birch readers travel to the Harbourfront Centre to participate in the Festival of Trees. It’s like a reading rock concert full of activities, and in particular, they will attend the Express and Nonfiction awards ceremonies to find out the books that were chosen by all the Silver Birch readers across Canada. We are so proud of all our readers, including the Blue Spruce readers in kindergarten to grade 2. Silver Birch is only possible if staff read alongside the students – and we thank the 15 staff expert readers who read a few of the 30 books in these programs and discussed the books with our students.

KINDERGARTEN SPRING CONCERT

We’re looking forward to seeing all of our Kindergarten students and their families at our Kindergarten Spring Concert on Thursday night, May 18th, at 6:00pm. Come and see our youngest learners celebrate their love of music! Don’t forget that our Spring Concert for students in Grades 1-6 is coming up on Thursday June 1st, 2017. More information will be coming soon about which groups are performing at this concert.

PROLOGUE FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

Our next Prologue performance is coming up on Tuesday May 23rd for students in Grades 1, 2 and 3. Parents/caregivers, if you are available you are very welcome to join us for this performance. Please see the attachment for more information.

LOST AND FOUND

The collection of items in Lost and Found continues to grow… and grow… and grow! Please make sure you are checking Lost and Found regularly and taking home any items that belong to you.

Clothing donations for those in need

To our Huron Community:

At this time of year, as we are going through our clothing and possibly getting rid of ‘older’ items, we would like to let you know there is a particular need right now for adult sized t-shirts, pants and socks, for both men and women.

A collection bin will again be put in the front foyer of the school for donations of those items in particular, and again someone from our school community has offered to take those items to individuals less fortunate in our community.

These items (t-shirts, pants and socks) can be donated at the school until Tuesday May 23rd.

Thank you to everyone for your support.

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART

Huron is pleased to be holding a Heart and Stroke Foundation Jump Rope for Heart event on June 6th, 2017. All money raised will support the Heart and Stroke Foundation in their mission to promote children’s health and fund vital heart and stroke research. Jump Rope for Heart encourages kids to get active by skipping rope while they collect pledges for heart disease and stroke research. They also learn the importance of living a healthy lifestyle and giving back to their community. This year marks Jump Rope for Heart’s 35th Anniversary and the Heart and Stroke Foundation is striving to get 1 million kids Jumping in close to 4,000 schools across Canada. We need your help to surpass our last 2012 Jump Rope for Heart fundraising amount of $4174.00. Please help support your child’s fundraising efforts by registering them online at http://www.JumpRopeForHeart.ca and send out donation request emails to friends, family and colleagues. Online fundraising is the quickest way to reach all of your contacts and online donors receive an automatic tax receipt. Plus, when students receive their first online donation (of any amount), they will receive a $5 kick-start and a free skipping rope (at the end of June) from the Heart & Stroke Foundation! Each student will be bringing home a pledge envelope on Monday (after our kick-off assembly) if you prefer to collect donations in-person. Please ensure that their pledge envelope is returned on the day of their school’s Jump Event Day – June 6th, 2017. Please also return any unused envelopes.
