Huron Happenings – October 24th, 2016

TAKE ME OUTSIDE DAY

Wednesday, October 26th, 2016 is National “Take Me Outside Day” – so make sure all students come to school dressed appropriately to be outside at some point today, regardless of the weather!
Take Me Outside Day is an opportunity for schools across Canada and all
around the world to show the importance of getting outside. It’s a day to support outdoor education and to extend the learning environment beyond the four walls of our classrooms!
Mission:
Take Me Outside (TMO) is a non-profit organization committed to educating and
creating awareness with Canadians about our connection to nature and our
time spent outside. TMO works collaboratively with other organizations,
school boards and individuals to encourage children and youth to spend
more time outside through various advocacy projects and initiatives. More info can be found at http://takemeoutside.ca/tmo-day.

HURON’S MONTHLY EARTH HOUR

As part of our commitment to being a PLATINUM leave ECO-SCHOOL, our monthly “Huron Earth Hour” for October will be held on Friday October 28th from 2:20-3:20pm. During this time we will turn off as many lights as possible and shut off, or power down, as many electronics as we can as well. This is a time when we can focus on energy conservation and activities that we can do as individuals, classes and a school community that do not involve things that use electricity.

LOST AND FOUND

The collection in our Lost and Found is continuing to grow, and grow, and grow! Please remember to check Lost and Found regularly and take home items that belong to your family.

COBS THE ANNEX is HELPING HURON FUNDRAISE

Don’t forget that for the entire month of October, COBS THE ANNEX, is helping Huron ‘raise some dough’ by donating 25% of your purchase back to our school. Please see the attached flier for more information – and thank you to COBS for their support of Huron!

ACORN ART

A reminder that the deadline for all Acorn Art orders is Wednesday, October 26th. Make sure all art work, orders and payment are brought to the school office on or by October 26th. There are extra art work templates and order forms in the office if anyone needs one.

Acorn Art

“Acorn Art” is a very popular activity and source of fundraising here at Huron and students are currently working on their art work which they will be bringing home to show you, as well as an order form. Orders for Acorn Art are due on Wednesday, October 26th, 2016.

In addition to art work created at school, if your son/daughter would like to do some art work at home and then submit it to Acorn Art as well that is absolutely do-able. Additional templates and order forms are available in the Main Office for anyone who would like more.

Remember orders are due by Wednesday October 26th, 2016.

PA DAY – OCTOBER 7th

Everyone please note that Friday October 7th, 2016 is a PA Day and there is NO SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS. Also remember that Thanksgiving is Monday October 10th, 2016 and schools will be closed for the holiday. Students will return to school on Tuesday October 11th, 2016.

STRINGS PROGRAM

Our Strings program is hoping to start again this week, on Wednesday October 5th which will be a Day 2. All students who started in the Strings program last year in Grade 5 will be continuing again this year in Grade 6. We also have a special opportunity for any new Grade 6 students to join the Strings program – provided you have had some previous experience with either violin, violo, cello or bass. If any new Grade 6 students are interested in joining the Strings program please speak to Ms. Hanson (our Music Teacher) and she can put you in touch with Mr. Bouts, our Strings Instructor.

LOST AND FOUND

The Lost and Found here at Huron is the beautiful wooden structure in the front foyer of the school – the one containing lost and found articles of clothing and other items such as lunch bags, water bottles, hats, backpacks, umbrellas, shoes, boots, etc. Even after only one month of school we have quite a collection of Lost and Found items already.
Please check Lost and Found regularly for things that might belong to your family. And remember that Lost items also end up in hallways, left outside, in classrooms, in lunchbins belonging to other classrooms, etc., so do check Lost and Found repeatedly as it sometimes takes a while for Lost items to make their way to the front foyer.

Of special importance – if your child is missing their lunchbag do check Lost and Found frequently. Food containers cannot sit in Lost and Found for very long before they become very ‘gross’. As a result, food containers are thrown out at the end of every week.

PHOTO DAY

As you can see in the “Future Dates” section of “Huron Happenings” our photo day is scheduled for Tuesday October 18th, 2016. Class and individual school photos will be taken that day so make sure students bring their best smile to school that day.
