Pizza Day; Vision and Hearing Clinic; UofT Basketball

(A reminder that if your family is on an extended vacation and students won’t be in school on January 5th you must notify the school office (416-393-1570) and let us know. When you call please let us know the date your child(ren) will be returning to school.)

PIZZA DAY

A reminder that our next Pizza Day is this week – on Wednesday January 7th, 2015. (Any extra pizza slices can be purchased for $2.00/slice but do remember that extra slices are not always available. Our pizza orders are placed well in advance based on orders received at that time.)

VISION and HEARING CLINIC

A Vision and Hearing Clinic is going to be available here at Huron on MONDAY JANUARY 19th, 2015. This is a wonderful opportunity for service to your children within the school day. These clinics are an optional service offered for families for health awareness purposes. School based clinics are operated by the Toronto Foundation for Student Success, the non-profit, charitable organization associated with the TDSB. Fees are collected to help offset the cost of bringing these clinics to schools and any proceeds are used to support TFSS – no profit is made. Attached is a copy of the registration form that all students received before the holidays and extra copies are available in the office. If you would like to have your child’s vision and/or hearing checked please return the registration form to the office by Wednesday January 7th, 2015.

We have already received the minimum number of registrations necessary so the clinic will definitely be happening. We have to confirm numbers by the end of the first week back in January so please do not delay in returning the form if you are interested in participating. We do want to remind parents that for children under the age of 18, the cost of an annual eye examination with an Optometrist in the community is covered by the Ministry of Health with your child’s health card.

FREE TICKETS to a U of T VARSITY BLUES GIRLS BASKETBALL GAME

Before the holidays, Abbey Addo, Jill Stratton and Vanessa Wallace from the University of Toronto Varsity Blues Girls Basketball Team came to Huron and visited for an afternoon. The players spoke about a healthy lifestyle and what it’s like to play on a varsity team. They also took some of the students through their basketball drills in our gym. Huron is pleased to have players and positive role models from our community as our guests. As their neighbours in the Bloor/Annex area, they are offering all Huron families an opportunity to see a game for FREE!

Fundraising Efforts

At this time we want to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone in the Huron community for your generosity and amazing efforts towards the various fundraising initiatives Huron undertook these first four months.

TERRY FOX
We are delighted to report that Huron Street has raised over $9000.00 for the Terry Fox Foundation in 2014. That amount may still increase as we know more donations credited to Huron are still being tallied.

ACORN CARDS
Our Acorn Cards fundraiser raised $1,374.56 for the school. This money is for teachers to use to offset the costs of some of the specialized programs or “extra” activities that happen in the classrooms.

QSP MAGAZINES
To date we have raised $1,445.00 for the school through our QSP Magazine sales. The website for on-line sales is open for the entire school year so this total may still increase…and you can keep this is mind for gifts for family and friends at any time during the year. The money raised through QSP fundraising goes to support various literacy programs here at the school; we purchase items such as big books for beginning readers, levelled readers, novel sets and chapter books for more advanced readers, as well as materials such as graphic novels and items to support classroom library collections.

STUDENT RUN FUNDRAISER FOR WHALES AND DOLPHINS
Some of the Grade 6 students independently organized a fundraiser for whales and dolphins in captivity which made almost $700.00. The money was donated to “Whale and Dolphin Conservation” in Plymouth, MA. As a result of this donation Huron has “adopted” a humpback whale named Colt. Make sure you check out the first floor bulletin board in January for information about Colt.

BAKE SALE
The Bake Sale before our Winter Concert raised $806.27 this year – thank you to everyone for your donations and of course to all buyers as well! This money will go to support and enhance the music programs here at Huron.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR
We had a very successful Bookfair this year – thank you to Ms. Will Stork and the many volunteers who supported her. Total sales at the Bookfair were $4,838.88 which means that Huron will receive approximately $2900.00 in product for our school from Scholastic. This will mean lots more books and other literacy materials for the Library and our classrooms.

WEBKINZ to the HOSPITAL FOR SICK CHILDREN
On Dec. 9th, four Huron Student Ambassadors represented Huron Street School as we made a donation to the Hospital for Sick Children of all the webkinz that were earned through the QSP fundraiser.
Representatives from the HSC were on hand to meet us and we learned that there are approximately 300 children who are not able to go home at all and will spend Christmas and the holiday season in the hospital. Our Webkinz toys will be given as part of a individual gift bag for every child who has to be in the hospital.
(We forgot to count but we think we donated approximately 30-40 Webkinz.)

RED NOSE CAMPAIGN
We ordered 400 red noses and it was a sell out, so that means we raised $1,200.00 to support the Toronto Foundation for Student Success to help provide food, warm clothing and other essentials to Toronto students in need. Once again, to everyone in the Huron Community – thank you all so much for your support! Huron Street Junior Public School has a lot to be proud of!

ROAD SAFETY AT THE BEGINNING and END OF THE SCHOOL DAY

We would like to remind everyone with a car, that there is a clearly indicated “SCHOOL BUS LOADING ZONE” that must be kept clear for all the buses that either pick up, or drop off at our school. Please DO NOT park your car in this area which is just south of sidewalk leading to the front doors and extending south all the way to the driveway into the parking lot.

It is very possible that there could be multiple buses arriving at the same time to pick-up and drop off students so this whole area MUST be kept clear of cars. Our bus drop off and pick up times are from approximately 8:15 – 9:00am and from 3:15 – 4:00pm. Please make sure the area is kept clear of all cars during these times. And a reminder to all drivers that if a bus has its lights on you must not pass the bus in either direction! Thank you for your co-operation with this.

Please send your child to school on the 17th with a toonie. (Milk and cookies will be sold to the grade 5 students on Dec. 18th, as they will be out on a field trip on the 17th). ** ANNUAL HOLIDAY SING-A-LONG **

On THURSDAY DECEMBER 18th at 10:40am (after morning recess) we will be having our Annual Holiday Sing-A-Long. All parents/caregivers are invited to join us for this annual event. Don’t forget to wear your “Elf” or other festive apparel on Thursday.

** HURON’S HOLIDAY FOOD DRIVE **

As is tradition here at Huron, students, parents and caregivers are asked to please bring a non-perishable food item to school for our Annual Holiday Sing-A-Long, or anytime between now and December 18th. All donations will go to the Daily Bread Food Bank, a non-denominational Canadian charity that strives to end hunger in urban communities. P.S. And if there are any parents/caregivers who would be available to help deliver the food please let the school know. Willing hands, and a vehicle, are always appreciated.

** LOST AND FOUND **

Our Lost and Found is getting extremely full – please everyone remember to check Lost and Found regularly. The Lost and Found is now arranged in the following way: all accessories (hats, mittens/gloves, scarves, lunchbags) are all put on tables in the front hallway. All articles of clothing (shirts, hoodies, sweaters/sweatshirts, pants, coats, snowpants) are spread out on the Lost and Found structure. Some of the articles are hanging from the hooks as well every slot has at least one article of clothing in it. Shoes and boots are on the floor underneath the structure, in the front foyer.

It is important for all families to note that ALL LOST AND FOUND ITEMS will be DONATED TO CHARITY over the Winter Holidays. The Lost and Found structure will be EMPTY when you return to school in January. Please note – food containers are thrown out regularly!! It doesn’t take long for the food in them to become disgusting, which is then smelly and attracts things we don’t want. For that reason, all food containers that end up in Lost and Found are thrown out regularly – so please check Lost and Found if your child left their lunchbag at school.

TEAM UP FOR GREEN

Team Up for GreenToronto Hydro has extended the end date of this campaign to December 31st, 2014. The TDSB now has 4 more weeks to reach our goal of raising $250,000.00. Toronto Hydro also added a draw to help lift our campaign – All customers who register for eBills /PAP from November 24th to December 31st will be entered for a chance to win a $2,000, $1,000 or $500 Loblaw’s gift card. The contest runs from November 25th to December 31st, 2014

We are asking for your support to take part in “Team Up For Green”. The Toronto District School Board, Toronto Hydro, and EcoSchools are working together for the good of our schools and our environment. Every single sign-up raises funds for new bike racks to be installed at TDSB schools across the city. With each Huron family that participates. it increases our chances of receiving additional bike racks for our school.

At the beginning of the campaign students took home a half-page flier, printed on green paper, with this information. Don’t forget to return that flier to the school with your name on it so that we can add your name to the tally chart we have in our first floor hallway. If you can’t find this flier there are extra copies in the office, or just let us know on any piece of paper that you’ve signed up for one or more of the “Team Up For Green” initiatives so we can add you to our tally chart.
