Huron Happenings – Nov. 12, 2018

PHOTO RETAKES

A reminder that photo retakes are happening on Tuesday November 13th, 2018 after lunch.  The photography company will be here and ready to start at 12:45pm.

Any student who was absent, or wasn’t yet attending Huron, on our original photo day (Oct. 16th) will automatically have their photos taken on Nov. 13th.  If you want retakes for photos that were taken on Oct. 16 the company has asked that you please return the proof sheet that you received and those photos can also be retaken.  It doesn’t take the company long to do retakes – usually less than an hour – so it’s important that all students having photos taken on Tuesday be at school at 12:45pm.

LOST AND FOUND

Our collection of Lost and Found items is reaching epic quantities…please remember to check our Lost and Found structure in the front foyer frequently and take home items that belong to you.

STUDENT DATA VERIFICATION FORMS

A few weeks ago you received an envelope with your child’s personal information according to what we have on our data base here at school.  Please remember to update any changes such as; address, phone numbers, emails etc. and return the form to school as soon as possible.  If there are no changes, you do not have to return the form.  It is very important that we have accurate contact information for our students so please make sure you notify the Office if anything should change throughout the school year!

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS
Chess Club at Huron Public School !

Chess Institute of Canada (CIC) is bringing its popular and rewarding  school chess club back to Huron this Winter !
All levels of chess players are welcome. Beginners will be gifted with the universal language of chess knowledge, while advanced players will be challenged and raised to new levels. While learning or expanding their chess knowledge, students also gain important values and life skills such as:

  • goal setting
  • creative analysis
  • resilience
  • respect for others
  • responsibility for decisions

These skills are gained through our approach to chess as a mental martial art, where choosing a move means:

  • taking wise, calculated risks
  • dealing with unexpected and disappointing outcomes
  • reflecting critically on changing situations
  • looking deeper to find more viable options than may at first appear
  • valuing diverse abilities and skill sets
  • realizing there are choices in every situation

As this strong, respectful and resilient mindset is nourished, players will have a lot of fun with our experienced and engaging instructors, who will appeal to and elevate their natural abilities. Chess is an amazing activity for children of all ages, where focus and skills are gained with surprising speed.
Program details:

  • Chess Club will be held on Tuesdays after school
  • starting on December 4th, 2018 for 12 weeks until March 5th, 2019
  • and is open to students in Grades SK to 6
  • The cost of the program is $156 and funding assistance is available

To register, please visit https://chessinstitute.ca/register and click on the “Chess Clubs” option. After selecting your city and school board, type in the first word of your school’s name and the chess club will come up.

Please feel free to reach out to CIC Operations Manager Marcus Wilker (marcus@chessinstitute.ca)  if you have any questions and he will be happy to help you.
