Report Cards

We have worked hard in the past couple of weeks not just on preparing report cards, but also on a whole school discussion about how we keep Huron safe and fair for everyone. There were classroom discussions of what this looks like in class, in the hallways, in the school yard and the lunch room. The students made great contributions to these classroom discussions, and teachers followed up with their own discussion at a staff meeting. This coming week we are having an assembly to celebrate what is going well and to reinforce some common expectations. Teachers will also be watching to catch students, individually or in groups, doing something well, kind, responsible, and we will be celebrating these on morning announcements. Huron is a busy place and I have enjoyed this opportunity to visit each class and interact with the students.

Hockey
Our Hockey team has been doing well and will be going to the district quarter finals this week, playing against Rosedale/Cottingham. The Basketball team played really well in their tournament on Thursday and tied for first place with Wilkinson. As they lost their head-to-head match up with Willkinson, Huron is eliminated and Wilkinson advances.

Black History Month
February is Black History Month and we have been having daily “Jambo” announcements in which students identify contributions of individuals in the black community in a Bingo game format. This coming week we will welcome Jody Nyasha Warner, author former U of T and TPL Librarian, and a former Huron parent. She will work with our Grade 4’s and 5’s. She will read from her book, “Viola Desmond Won’t be Budged!” and follow this with discussion and a workshop on the creative writing process.
